Make Your Own Help Sign - Be Creative!
In addition to shelter,
food and money, some people on the streets need help with signs they
can display to ask for help! These signs can be based on the
lyrics of songs
about the need for help, hunger and feeling down. Here are a few help signs you can print
out, paste or tape to cardboard, and give to folks on the street,
perhaps with a little string or stick to hold them up. A small
cardboard tent will also work. To make
them more attractive, print them in different colors or use brightly
colored paper from your local copy store. The guy in the
street may appreciate the chance to chose the sign that he/she prefers? Maybe you should
give your homeless neighbors a healthy snack (homemade cookies) or a couple of bucks, as well? Could
this be a little project for your non-profit club our your school
friends? Your own song could also make a difference.
WE ONLY accept smiles, hugs, food and
money?
Thank you :D

… I’m just one, one
more poor hungry man
Sun in the sky hurts my eye
Mouth all dry, may God help me
Wait by the road, man don’t come
Rice all gone for thirty miles
I’m just one, one more poor hungry man…

Your local printer or copy store will most likely also
be able to print these signs in any color using the PDF files that
you can download to a disk or flash memory stick. Some artistic
people may wish to do their own lettering and add more flare or colors,
photos, logos, etc.
If you're an art, geography or civics teacher or student, this may be a good
project for your class? A team of 3-4 students can share the
inspiration of designing and duplicating the signs and the work of
making homemade cookies and collecting a couple of bucks to make a
capital package for the homeless. The team can also share the
experience of delivering the goods and witnessing the response of the
down-and-out guys, gals and families. College or advanced high
school students can also do more research on the number of homeless
people in their own communities, and the policies of local government
that affect them positively or negatively.
Keep a couple of loose dollars and quarters in your
pocket or other handy place just in case you're lucky enough to
encounter someone who needs it more than you. Separate these
moneys from your main stash so you don't have to flash a big wad of $20s
in the street. Earmark this money as your People' Purse (bum
bucks?) . If you need to use it for feeding the parking meter,
that's OK too, as long as you replenish it as soon as possible.
Don't avoid people in need - Seek them (with your People's Purse at
hand). And give them a kind word and warm smile, as well!
Selecting the Truly Needy
It's OK to select people you think are really needy as
opposed to those who may be just lazy or doing a con job. But, if
your selection comes up with zero every week, perhaps you need to loosen
up just a little bit? Most of the people at the bottom have
problems, including how they interact with other people. Don't
expect a great performance from a guy or gal who's down and out. |
